On Friday, faculty at the University of Iowa rallied to demand a just medical leave policy. Given their precarious job status and lack of benefits, non-tenure track faculty at the school say they are facing a crisis because of the lack of emergency medical sick leave and other critical benefits when serious medical conditions, like cancer, arise. Led by cancer patients and moms with no maternity leave, the group demanded the university create a sick leave bank to cover such issues.
Less than 3% of faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which include tenure- and non-tenure track faculty, are covered by the University of Iowa’s current policy.
