Adjunct faculty from across the U.S. tuned-in for a webinar on unemployment insurance, hosted by SEIU Faculty Forward and the National Employment Law Project (NELP). George Wentworth, senior counsel for NELP, provided a wealth of information tailored to adjuncts’ unique needs and answered questions about the application process, various contingencies and the definition of “reasonable assurance.”
Christian Schlaerth, adjunct professor of Criminology, Sociology and Student Life Skills at Miami Dade College, Barry University, and University of Miami, gave a heartfelt account of his challenges and why he is fighting for a union at Miami Dade College. He also gave insight into why benefits like unemployment insurance are important, but provide only a short-term solution to a long-term problem.
“We know America needs unions so we don’t have to turn to unemployment, but [unemployment insurance] is an important safety net for us to have as we continue the fight for unions.”
A recording of the webinar will be posted on Faculty Forward’s website in the coming days.
